Now available in the UK, "Damasteel" Damascus steels offer the ancient tradition of pattern welding, with the best steel properties of today. There are four types available. Three are Damascene steels i.e. they have patterns in them, the third is without pattern. All are RSP (Rapidly Solidified Powder technique) steels with much higher fracture strengths compared to conventional steels.
1]
Hardenable
Barrel Steels. These
come in two grades; Low
Alloy tough hardening which is a combination of two steels (AISI
4140 & AISI 4340) in approximately a 100 layers. This
Damascus offers hardness up 55HRC, excellent forge ability and
forge weld ability. It is not corrosion resistant but can be
Blued/Browned. Applications include firearms and firearm parts,
Knife blades, Axes and other edge tools. Article numbers begin
with 92## Hardenable Stainless Damascus Barrel steel. This steel is a combination of two hardenable grades (AISI 416 & AISI 431), which is corrosion resistant once hardened. Hardenable up to 50HRC, with excellent toughness. Good machine ability. Applications include Firearm and Air weapon barrels and parts, edged tools and knives. Article numbers begin with 96##
2] Patterned Martensitic Damascene Stainless steel comprises two different hardenable steel grades (RWL34 & PMC27), welded together in over a hundred layers. The steel is stainless when hardened with extreme strength. The steel has a wide range of applications from knives to axes and gun barrels. Several patterns are available with more being developed. Article Numbers begin with 93###. Drop point hunter. Hand forged Damasteel bar into butterfly pattern
Odins eye pattern Damasteel Sghian Dubh (the small dagger a Scotsman puts down his sock when wearing the kilt, it means "Black Knife") with Lignum Vitae and Buffalo horn hilt. Damasteel putter. The smartest thing on the green.
The Fish. Damasteel Heimskringla pattern hunter blade with Roe buck hilt.
3] The austenitic Damascene steel consists of two non hardenable steels, welded together in over a hundred layers. It is stainless and is suitable for jewelry, table cutlery, watchcases, knife fittings and similar products. It has good cold working ductility like conventional austenitic stainless steels. Article numbers begin with 95##.
4]
RWL34 is stainless hardenable steel without a pattern. It is,
like the Damascene steels above, a rapidly solidified powder
steel for highest edge strength demands.
